Advanced ceramic manufacturers produce a comprehensive range of silicon nitride, sialon, and zirconia weld location and control pins. These precision components are used in the metal forming industry to enable precise welding of nuts to sheet metal. Silicon nitride-based ceramics possess excellent mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties that make them ideal for metal forming applications. Silicon nitride-based weld location pins have a proven track record of over 20 years of successful use by several leading automotive manufacturers.
Zirconia weld location pins are a more recent addition to the available options. They excel in applications where greater toughness is required, such as when severe impact loading is possible. Like silicon nitride pins, they have excellent wear resistance; however, they are not recommended where thermal shock may occur. Additionally, they weigh twice as much as equivalent silicon nitride weld pins. Zirconia is available in two grades with different performance characteristics – one grade offering standard properties and another with slightly superior characteristics for demanding applications.
